The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.

We are seeking candidates for the position of Track Inspector/Maintainer Intern (1204) in the .    

SEPTA currently requires all new employees to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination at their pre-employment medical appointment.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

To be proficient in the inspection, maintenance, repair, and renewal of all track work within the City and Suburban Transit Divisions including paved track, special work and third rail in accordance with SEPTA standards. Must direct equipment used in the repair, maintenance, and renewal of track without supervision.

 We are seeking candidates for the position of 1204 Track Maintainer Intern in the MOW/Track Department.    

 

 *Starting Pay Rate: $32.03/hour - After 12 Months: $35.59, based on applicable contract.

 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Inspects an assigned area of track under traffic including bridges, trestles and highways, performing functions.
  2. Checks gage, surface and alignment of track, inspects overhead support poles, contact rails and paving conditions for compliance with SEPTA standards.
  3. Checks clearance for safe passage for all rail vehicles.
  4. Reports and records track conditions.
  5. Tightens and adjusts switches, wedges, frogs, third rail components, rail joints, derails ad other track related devices.
  6. Installs and maintains appropriate signage for slow zones, work zones, etc.
  7. Takes action to compensate for track defects.
  8. Removes obstructions and fire hazards from the track.
  9. Maintains both track and switch inspection reports.
  10. Monitors the repair, renewal and construction of track, special work, and third rail, insuring compliance with SEPTA standards.
  11. Directs and monitors the operation of such equipment as the grinding car, geometry car, production tamper and Sperry car.
  12. Directs and monitors the activities associated with the thermite welding and cadwelding processes.
  13. Performs emergency repairs when needed.
  14. Can be assigned to perform any type of track work related duties such as flagging, track maintenance, ROW cleaning, etc.
  15. Performs snow and ice work as required.
  16. Trains and instructs lower classifications in line of progression.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
     

ADITIONAL SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Subject to call during storms and emergencies.
  • Works in strained and cramped environments.
  • Works under vehicular and railroad traffic conditions.
  • Works near live conductors 600v and higher.
  • Uses personal protective equipment as required.
  • Subject to excessive vibration and noise.
  • Will have a working knowledge of all SEPTA General Divisional and Departmental rules and regulations
  • Walks/works on uneven surfaces.
  • Must attain all necessary qualifications and maintain such qualifications on the prescribed requalification cycles.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have full use of all limbs, possess good eyesight and hearing, must be alert and agile and be cable of sustained heavy lifting i.e., must be capable of lifting and carrying 100 pounds alone and 80 pounds alone over a period of time handling bagged salt during storms etc..
  • Must be capable of walking as much as eight miles of track per shift, carry the tools required to accomplish their duties, i.e., level board, third rail gauge, miscellaneous measuring equipment, wrenches, writing materials, saw, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must have valid driver's license.
  • Must have a minimum of two years of experience in track work
  • Must be able to work shift work
  • Must be able to walk as much as 6 miles of track per shift
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions
  • Must become 213.7 qualified during program as prescribed by SEPTA's SMW 100 Manual for the Inspection, Maintenance and Construction of Track. (During Internship)
  • Must become Track, Flag and Street Work Zone certified (During Internship).
  • Must become proficient in the use of ultra-sonic testing equipment to detect internal flaws in rail steel. (During Internship)
  • Must satisfactorily complete written qualifications and performance tests as required.
