The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.

We are seeking candidates for the position of Rail Vehicle General Mechanic -2nd Class (0832) in our City Transit, Suburban Transit, and Regional Railroad Divisions.    

Compensation Data

 

-for SEPTA City Transit Division: $25/hr. (Increase to $27/hr. after 12 months)

-for SEPTA Suburban Transit Division: $24/hr. (Increase to $26/hr. after 12 months)

-for SEPTA Regional Railroad Division: $24/hr. (Increase to $26/hr. after 12 months)

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Performs routine inspection, cleaning, maintenance and other duties on rail vehicle electrical, pneumatic and mechanical equipment.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILTIES

  1. To be proficient in the inspection, cleaning, maintenance of rail vehicle electrical, pneumatic and mechanical equipment.
  2. Inspects, adjusts, replaces, tests, assembles, installs, motors, accessory parts, vehicle trucks, parts, truck frames, brake equipment, truck assemblies, air equipment, gears, wheels, brake shoes, etc.
  3. Cleans and lubricates equipment, units, parts such as compressors, air filters, air tank mechanisms, brake cylinders, etc.
  4. Checks equipment units, parts such as contactor tips for gap, interlock and controlling fingers and tips for wipe and clearance springs for compression and tension, etc.
  5. Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must satisfactorily complete pre-employment and performance qualifications tests as required.
  • Must have mechanical experience maintaining and repairing engines, heavy equipment and/or vehicle chassis.
  • Must possess Pennsylvania driver's license or equivalent.
