The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.

 

We are seeking candidates for the position of Rail Veh Equip Car Welder/Collision Spec (0803) in the REE&M/REM Fern Rock Shops.   The starting rate for this position is $38.68/hour; after one year of employment, the rate of pay will increase to $42.98/hour.

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Must be proficient in accurately reconstructing all types of damaged rail vehicles with particular emphasis on welding, cutting techniques, proper jigging and distortion control to ensure structural integrity. Must be proficient in the use of transits and other measuring equipment and processes used to accurately establish what corrections are required.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Cuts, welds, and splices safety sensitive structural and/or load bearing members of the carbody frame. 
  2. Sets up and adjusts framing and related equipment, associated with structural, repairs, that are used to restore vehicles to manufacturer's and SEPTA’s acceptable specifications.
  3. Consults with supervisory personnel to evaluate collision damage accurately to estimate repairs.
  4. Performs wilding operations in accordance with established industrial, SEPTA and departmental specifications, guides, standards, and directions either verbal or written. Directs activities of employees of lower classifications.

ADDITIONAL SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years technical school and/or accredited applied trades training.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a first class mechanic on rail car construction, rebuilding and repair.
  • Must have valid PA driver's license or equivalent.
  • Must satisfactorily complete written qualifications test.
