Starting Salary: $87,620.00
Additional $5,000 salary increase for those with a Pennsylvania PE License
OVERALL DESCRIPTION
The Project Designer provides technical expertise to support maintenance, troubleshooting, compliance, and modernization of vertical transportation systems - including elevators and escalators, across SEPTA’s transit network. Assists with other mechanical equipment and systems as required.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides analysis, design reviews, and technical support for vertical transportation (VT) systems and related maintenance activities.
- Develops conceptual, preliminary, and final designs for VT equipment and modernization projects, including coordination with third-party contractors.
- Writes Specifications and Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for VT systems and reviews designs for compliance with standards; prepares proof of concept for new technologies.
- Generates and coordinates design plans and specifications for in-house and third-party work related to elevators and escalators.
- Reviews, monitors, and oversees factory testing and field installation of VT equipment; witnesses acceptance tests and ensure compliance with ASME A17.1 and other codes.
- Takes necessary action to correct unusual equipment operations and recommends standard preventive maintenance procedures for VT systems.
- Conducts preliminary engineering site walks and reviews third-party construction drawings and specifications for VT installations.
- Supports system integration of interoperable VT subsystems from different suppliers for compatibility and functional performance.
- Manages performance of third-party technical services, including consultants and OEM representatives, for VT projects.
- Initiates, upgrades, and implements design standards for VT systems to ensure consistency and reliability.
- Reviews and approves third-party VT designs and construction documents for conformity with established standards.
- Generates technical reports, audits, and memoranda in a professional manner; participates in periodic review of VT drawings and specifications.
- Promotes and enforce safe working conditions in accordance with accepted safety practices and procedures for VT systems and all other maintenance activities.
- Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures; reports on any safety concerns or hazards affecting VT operations or other Authority business.
- Performs other duties as assigned including any other area of focus within B&B Mechanical Engineering group.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma/GED and eleven (11) years of relevant experience in Vertical Transportation (VT) systems, including elevators, escalators, and associated control systems required.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience (two years of related experience equating to one (1) year of formal post high school education) may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, required.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Strong understanding of applicable codes, standards, and recommended practices (ASME A17.1, NFPA, ADA, and local building codes), required.
- Familiarity with, and ability to troubleshoot to the component level, various VT systems and subsystems including microprocessor and PLC based controllers, preferred.
- Demonstrated computer skills in design and diagnostic tools (AutoCAD, Revit, and OEM diagnostic software, A-B Studio, etc.), preferred.
- Experience in developing, managing, and reviewing VT projects, including modernization and compliance initiatives, preferred.
