The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.  

   

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer (Ops Supp) (1015) - Bridges & Buildings in the B&B/Bridges & Buildings department.

Salary Range: Min: $65,988.00 - Mid: $82,472.00 - Max: $98,956.00 

*Note: Starting salary not to exceed midpoint.

       

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

The Mechanical Project Engineer will be responsible for undertaking engineering assignments involving mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, piping, fueling systems, elevators, escalators, and mechanical maintenance equipment. This position is also responsible to provide technical support and direction for engineering activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, establishing standards and inspection plans, program/project development and consulting, project scheduling and cost estimating, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

I. EM&C Engineering General 

  1. Consults with senior level engineer/supervision in project definition.
  2. Exercises proper judgment in application of moderately complex engineering and quality assurance principles.
  3. Assists in preparation of budgets for proposed projects and work to be accomplished through third party.
  4. Generates written memoranda, technical reports, specifications, audits, presentations, etc. in a professional effective manner.
  5. Generates equipment specifications for procurement purposes in sufficient detail to ensure contractor/vendor interpretation.
  6. Adapts to team efforts where indicated in resolution of matters not suitable for singular contribution.
  7. Interfaces with Governmental Agencies and, as necessary, other transit Authorities concerning pertinent matter.
  8. Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.

DISCIPLINE RESPONSIBILITIES

II. Facilities, Engineering & Construction - Mechanical Engineering

  1. Responsible for Engineering design and analysis in assigned field of Mechanical engineering.
  2. Responsibilities shall include conceptual, preliminary, final design, and costing of projects as directed by senior level supervision/management.
  3. Generates and coordinates design plans, specifications, and construction procedures relative to any given project/program.
  4. Formulates suitable design parameters, characteristics, and requirements as they may relate to an assigned task and execute where so directed.
  5. Initiates, upgrades, and implements design standards to be employed in assigned specialty area. 
  6. Develops competency in field related investigations, tests, and troubleshooting, including use of available diagnostic devices. 
  7. Provides field engineering support to Maintenance Managers and hourly workforce. Analyzes inspection and maintenance requirements and develops programs to improve performance, reliability, and regulatory/code compliance. 
  8.  Acts as Project Manager for third party contracts for design, construction, or other technical services. Monitors Contractor performance to assure conformance to contract specifications. 
  9. Use of various types of engineering software and Computer Assisted Design (CAD) system to ensure consistent quality engineering documents.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • B. S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and four (4) years of satisfactory progressive relevant work performance that indicates that the individual can perform the technical and supervisory responsibilities of the position required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD or similar, and relevant discipline-specific applications as required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
