OVERALL DESCRIPTION
We are currently recruiting to fill an entry level Engineer I position for our Engineering, Maintenance, and Construction (EM&C) Division’s Power Department. The Power Department is responsible for all of SEPTA’s infrastructure-related to power and electrical systems. The Engineering group within the Power Department is responsible for performing and coordinating electrical design work, overseeing and providing technical input into construction and maintenance of electrical infrastructure and the overhead distribution network, and developing and maintaining standards and other documentation. The Power Department maintains legacy systems from the early 20th century while also exploring innovative technologies in areas such as energy storage, electric vehicles, and renewable energy. Additionally, students who are on track to receive their Power or Electrical Engineering degrees by August, 2026, are also invited to apply.
This position is responsible for undertaking engineering/quality assurance assignments that are considered to be of "basic complexity" in size and scope. This position is further responsible to provide technical support and direction for engineering/quality assurance activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, establishing inspection plans, program/project development and consulting, statistical methods, audits, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Document for record all major design concepts, approaches and agreements made with any and all parties involved in the project.
- Assists Project Engineering with preparation of reports relating to progress of the work and the Contractor's compliance with progress schedule, shop drawings, and other submittals.
- Assists Project Engineer in project management tasks.
- Maintains a diary or log book to record Contractor manpower and hours on the job site; weather conditions; data relative to work directive changes, change orders or, changed conditions; list of job site visitors, daily activities, decisions, and observations in general.
- Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
ADDL / DISCIPLINE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists in Engineering design and analysis in assigned field.
- Assists in investigations/field surveys.
- Be aware of and practice standards as applicable to assigned field.
- Reviews drawings for accuracy and completeness coordinating with other specialty groups within the department where necessary/advisable.
- Assists in preliminary planning layouts/sketches where dictated by assigned task/project.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Power or Electrical Engineering required.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills required.
- Excellent PC skills including Microsoft Office applications required.
- Working knowledge of Autocad version 14 or higher required.
- Must be able to work flexible work shift assignments based on project stages, including varied or on-call shifts, holidays and/or weekend as needed.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Internal SAM employees are eligible to apply for open positions (transfer/promotion) after six (6) months from the date of assignment for their current position. A review of the previous one (1) year performance appraisal (to ensure minimum standard of “Meets Expectations” for overall rating) will be conducted. A review of Discipline record, to ensure no discipline actions occurred during previous 1 year of employment will also be conducted.
