OVERALL DESCRIPTION

We are currently recruiting to fill an entry level Engineer I position for our Engineering, Maintenance, and Construction (EM&C) Division’s Power Department. The Power Department is responsible for all of SEPTA’s infrastructure-related to power and electrical systems. The Engineering group within the Power Department is responsible for performing and coordinating electrical design work, overseeing and providing technical input into construction and maintenance of electrical infrastructure and the overhead distribution network, and developing and maintaining standards and other documentation. The Power Department maintains legacy systems from the early 20th century while also exploring innovative technologies in areas such as energy storage, electric vehicles, and renewable energy.  

This position is responsible for undertaking engineering assignments that are considered to be of "basic complexity" in size and scope. This position is further responsible for providing technical support and direction for engineering activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, establishing inspection plans, program/project development and consulting, statistical methods, audits, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Document for record all major design concepts, approaches and agreements made with any and all parties involved in the project.
  • Assists Project Engineering with preparation of reports relating to progress of the work and the Contractor's compliance with progress schedule, shop drawings, and other submittals.
  • Assists Project Engineer in project management tasks.
  • Maintains a diary or log book to record Contractor manpower and hours on the job site; weather conditions; data relative to work directive changes, change orders or, changed conditions; list of job site visitors, daily activities, decisions, and observations in general.
  • Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures, as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, the public, self and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.

ADDL / DISCIPLINE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in Engineering design and analysis in assigned field (i.e. Power or Electrical).
  • Assists in investigations/field surveys.
  • Be aware of and practice standards as applicable to assigned field.
  • Reviews drawings for accuracy and completeness coordinating with other specialty groups within the department where necessary/advisable.
  • Assists in preliminary planning layouts/sketches where dictated by assigned task/project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor Degree in Power or Electrical Engineering required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills required.
  • Excellent PC skills including Microsoft Office applications required.      
  • Working knowledge of Autocad required.  
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to work varied shifts, holidays and weekends as required.
  • Must be in on-call rotation to respond to Power emergencies as required.
