The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the sixth largest transportation system in the United States, with a vast network of fixed route services including bus, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and commuter rail serving a 2,200 square mile service region.      

We are currently seeking a Structural Inspector - Bridges & Buildings (9172) in the EM&C B&B/Bridges & Buildings.         

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Responsible for inspecting bridges, buildings, and other structures in accordance with SEPTA, State, and National Standards or technical code requirements established by government or regulatory agencies.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILTIES

  1. Performs structural inspection programs for the entire SEPTA system including more than 700 bridges, elevated transit structures, tunnels, buildings, stations and shops, retaining walls, rock cuts and embankments, catenary and signal bridges, miscellaneous wayside and other related structures.
  2. Prepares structural inspection reports.
  3. Prepares annual reports for maintenance of structures.
  4. Works nights or weekends if required to accomplish the inspections within allowed track or vehicle traffic outages.
  5. Updates the data base of all structural inspection records.
  6. Performs inspections of major impact to structural safety including construction of bridge  replacement or repairs, movements of construction equipment, demolitions along the right of way or similar projects. 
  7. Responsible to emergencies related to the condition of structures.
  8. Regularly performs the duties of “On-Call” Inspector to respond on a 24/7 basis to call-outs and other structural emergencies. This task is assigned on a rotating basis among the several structural inspectors.
  9. Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures, as well as applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises, or hazards in the hazards affecting self and other employees is responsible for the individual’s own safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Graduate required.
  • Must have five (5) years hands-on bridge inspection experience, and have successfully completed an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course. (PennDOT’s 3-week course or equivalent), and have their resultant inspection certification valid, current, and up to date.
  • OR
  • Be certified as a Level III Bridge Safety Inspector under the NSPE program for National Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), and have successfully completed an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course. (PennDOT’s 3-week course or equivalent), and have their resultant inspection certification valid, current, and up to date.
  • OR
  • Have two (2) years hands-on bridge inspection experience and have a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and qualify as an Engineer In Training (EIT) and have successfully completed an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course. (PennDOT’s 3-week course or equivalent), and have their resultant inspection certification valid, current, and up to date.
  • OR
  • Have four (4) years hands-on bridge inspection experience and have an Associates Degree in Engineering and have successfully completed an FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course. (PennDOT’s 3-week course or equivalent), and have their resultant inspection certification valid, current, and up to date.
    • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must be physically capable of bridge inspection activities including: 
    • Ability to carry, set-up and climb ladders.
    • Ability to climb and descend steep slopes.
    • Ability to walk track and ballast.
    • Freedom from claustrophobia or vertigo.
  • Ability to respond to emergency structural situations on a 24/7 basis required.
  • A working knowledge of PC-based software applications including MS Office Suite and Access database software required.
